An American StorySan Francisco photographer Tom Graves announces the release of An American Story, a 14-minute DVD on the history of Nisei Veterans in California. By telling the story of California’s Nisei Veterans before, during and after WWII, An American Story teaches the broader history of the Relocation and anti-Asian discrimination.

Groups of veterans at the 59th Nisei VFW Reunion in Orange County were the first to view An American Story. High school teachers have asked for the DVD in California’s classrooms, where the WWII Relocation of Japanese Americans is part of the 11th grade curriculum. An American Story grew out of research supported by the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program.

The Nisei say:

“Dear Tom, Thank you so much for the wonderful DVD, An American Story. We are pleased and proud as Japanese Americans to have parts of our life story captured by you and your talents.”

“I showed your DVD and it was met with great reviews! This DVD should be purchased not for ourselves, but for our children & grandchildren.”

“Seeing the DVD on a large screen was very impressive! Thank you for your hard work on the film.”

One reviewer wrote, “This story is certainly an important part of recent American history that we cannot allow to be swept into a mere footnote. Thank you for bringing it front and center.”

Another said, “Thanks so much for your powerful, moving account of Nisei soldiers. It tells exactly the kind of story I want my grandchildren to understand.”
